History of Maryland Mensa Calendar Contacts Welcome to Maryland Mensa’s new website. We’re starting with core materials (e.g., monthly calendars, officer contact information) and plan to roll out additional sections as they’re developed and stress-tested. We welcome your suggestions on what you’d like to see on the site as it matures–please pass them t o David Hubbbard . Welcome to Maryland Mensa! If you are planning to attend an event, please confirm with the event coordinator that scheduled events through the organization as found in the calendar will continue as scheduled, and have not been cancelled. Thank you. This page will be dedicated to news and events as information for the members, information for prospective members, and celebrating highlights and activities of the group. Check back often as this page will be updated frequently. We will be having a New and Prospective Members party – anyone who has joined (or moved into) Maryland Mensa in the past 12 months, or who has taken the test within the past 12 months, even if you haven’t received your acceptance yet, is invited to attend for free. There will be food and party favors!There will be some drinks (alcoholic and non-) provided, but you may also BYOB. Here’s your chance to see what Maryland Mensa is doing, tell us what you’d like to see Maryland Mensa doing, and find out how to start a regular event or put a special event on our monthly calendar. Meet some of the ExComm, find out about opportunities to be on the ExComm and be part of making Mary land Mensa even better! Our Monthly Meetings are at the River Hill Meeting Room, 6330 Trotter Road, Clarksville, MD. Use the Great Star exit from Route 32 West. There is no exit from Route 32 East. BRAINSTORMING SIG This is a virtual SIG, meeting on Zoom. It is intended to serve as a place where people can brainstorm ways to improve our organization, help newcomers find out what our group does, and provide experienced people with advice if they need it. In the course of human events, people may think that our organization should do things a bit differently, or might want to do things that have never been done before. This SIG exists so that we can at least talk about it. Some people might have an idea for a service or project our group of merry men and women might want to explore or investigate In addition to brainstorming more ideas, new people might need a place to go to find out what an RG is, what the difference is between an RG and an AG, or what is going on in their neck of the woods. Even more experienced people might want a place to go to review available activities, see if there are any available virtual events, how to navigate Mensa Connect, or how to contact the National Office. Some people might want to discuss Mensa with fellow Mensans. Events in Western Maryland Area: Greetings from the mountain beyond Frederick! Who else would like to see more events out here? Maybe you live here, or in a neighboring state, or elsewhere and you’d like to visit here sometimes to hike or catch a concert or museum. Our only regular event here is the monthly 2nd Thursday pizza gathering just west of Frederick (Maryland Mensa’s longest running event at same location)–by the way, in case you haven’t noticed in that newsletter listing, we usually start early and play board/card games. Let’s plan some more events! Or you’re always welcome to put what you’d like to see in the calendar yourself. Please contact me to brainstorm ideas and gauge interest; we can talk individually or I can schedule us a Zoom at compatible time. My ideas: hikes, camping trips, games, jigsaw puzzles, potlucks, teas, labyrinths, change ringing, concerts/shows, museums, etc. Yes, please contact me even if you just want to weigh in on these and other ideas. Western MD Area Coordinator Jenny Foster, H 3O1-371-4312, pi@xecu.net Games Afternoon next weekend (April 21) CANCELLED – Wegman’s is no longer permitting games in their cafes, and I was not able to get a similar suitable place arranged. If you know of someplace that would permit games that meets the following criteria, please let me know, and I will resume setting up games events: -free to use -has food for sale or allows food (but does not require every person there to purchase something) -Low enough noise level that players can hear each other -Tables that fit or can be put together to fit 6-8 people -Available on a Sunday afternoon and either uncrowded enough not to need advance booking, or can be booked 2 months in advance because that’s the kind of lead time we need for the calendar -Centrally located in either Howard or Baltimore Counties – such as Columbia, Elkridge, Catonsville, something near a highway or major state route so that it’s easy to find and get to. This could be a community center, a party room at your complex, a restaurant if it meets the criteria. I’m not suggesting Panera or Starbucks, even though both are known for letting people sit there for hours with computers, playing board games is a different level of noise, taking up space, and the tables are pretty small and not that easy to drag together.
